Be SunAWARE on the 4th

Be SunAWARE on the 4th

Parades, picnics, swim parties, camp-outs, barbecues and every other summer-time activity is planned for this weekend.  Celebrate the 4th of July! But enjoy your time outdoors safely.

SunAWARE was created for days like these.  There is no reason not to enjoy being outdoors if you take a few minutes to protect yourself, and the first three steps in SunAWARE make it easy.  Follow this abbreviated version:

A – Avoid unprotected exposure and seek shade
W- Wear sun protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses
A- Apply broad spectrum sunscreen and reapply every two hours

Its not hard. Just take a moment to make sure you have a tightly woven long sleeve shirt or swim shirt, a hat with a three-inch brim, sunglasses, and broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher.

Put everything into a bag the night before and place it by the door.  You will want to include a bottle of water and probably a towel or two.  Once outside, look for a cool, shady spot.  Remember, while shade will block direct rays, you still need to use all methods of protection simultaneously as indirect rays bounce from surfaces such as sand, concrete or paint.

But if you follow these first three simple steps in SunAWARE, when the fireworks start you won’t be feeling uncomfortable with a burn and you won’t be worried about the consequences.

Being able to stay safely outside on beautiful, sunny days creates a sense of freedom.  Enjoy the Fourth of July and the sense of independence created by being SunAWARE.

Be Safe.  Be SunAWARE.  Happy Fourth of July!
